How to Get Here from There!

BY PLANE

You can fly into Boston Logan in Massachusetts; Portland Jetport or Bangor International in Maine; or Manchester Airport in New Hampshire, and either rent a car or take a shuttle-plane from there. Driving time is approximately 4 hours from Boston and 1 1/2 to 2 hours from Portland and Bangor. When you book with a boat in the fleet, Continental offers a discount for flying into Portland.

From Boston, US Air (Colgan Air 1-800-272-5488) flies directly into Knox County Airport in Owls Head. From there it is only a five minute taxi ride to the boat; call Schooner Bay Taxi at 1-800-539-5001 before you arrive.

From Portland, there are shuttle flights into Knox County Airport or you can arrange for Midcoast Limo (1-800-937-2424) or Classy Taxi Limo Services (1-800-499-0663; salem@maine.rr.com) to meet and drive you directly to the boat.

BY CAR

CAR RENTAL: Avis (1-800-831-2847), National (1-800-227-2368), Enterprise (1-800-325-8007) and Budget (1-800-527-0700) all have offices in Rockland, Portland, and Bangor. Avis is located at the Knox County Regional Airport in Owls Head. Taxi service is available from there. National's office in Rockland is very willing to drive you back to the schooner on Monday when you have returned your car.

DIRECTIONS (from the South): Avoid the city of Boston altogether by taking Interstate 495 North to Interstate 95 North. From there you have two options: scenic or less trafficked. If you are traveling during mid-summer on a weekend take the less trafficked route, unless you have time to meander.

Scenic route: Follow 95 North to Falmouth. Take Falmouth Exit 9 to Interstate 95 North. From 95 take Exit 22 (Brunswick-Coastal Route 1). From Brunswick, continue on Route 1 North into Rockland.

Route 1 (Park Street) turns left onto Main Street in downtown Rockland...DON'T TURN LEFT, turn right instead on Route 73 (map pictured below) going south, beginning at a set of lights near The Tradewinds Motel. Proceed south on 73 and at the "Y" in the road veer left onto Water Street, and then take a left at the stop sign onto Ocean Drive. (When you see the gazebo turn left.) You will see the J. & E. Riggin at the MBNA dock.

Less trafficked route: Take 95 North all the way to Augusta and then take Route 17 East to Rockland, where it will join with Route 1A. Turn right on Route 1A (Broadway), and then left on Route 1 North (Park Street) toward the harbor.

NOTE: The southern part of the Maine Turnpike, i.e. 95, will be under construction until 2004. This may affect your driving time. Contact 1-877-MTA-WIDE or www.maineturnpike.com for up-to-date info.
